Rinko Kawauchi's Illuminance came in the mail this week after a month delay.  I was surprised at how heavy the package was, since I have gotten used to Kawauchi's work in the slender Little, More editions produced in Japan.  I was even more surprised, and thrilled, to see the design and how many pictures the book contained.  Aperture has done a magnificent job; Kawauchi's amazing photographs

In the 1950s and 60s Edward Gorey was Art Editor at Anchor Books. He did the drawing, design, layout and/or typography for the covers of the then-new series of paperbacks Anchor had started printing.  I'd come across his versions of Henry James' What Maisie Knew and Kafka's Amerika a few years ago but never thought to look up how many other covers Gorey designed for the press.  The answer:
